CHAPTER 12

“So you and my brother?” Leena had returned from someplace called The North with an enormous man named Atsila. Who was, according to Leena, a bear shifter.

Like the one at the theater.

He brought two equally enormous friends with him, and I got the distinct impression they were assembling a wall of muscle around me. “Uh, yes. Vic and I are seeing each other.”

Leena’s lips curved up. “So how serious we talkin’? Sleeping together or spending the rest of your lives together?” She was dressed in normal clothes but still had a pretty impressive braid as the last time I saw her just outside the Shadow. She looked like a Viking cosplaying as a modern woman.

How open did I want to be with her? I remembered how she looked at Vic that day. A mix of fondness and longing. I remembered being struck by the feeling she wished they were closer.

Being frank with her was one way to start the journey. “We haven’t gotten intimate.”

Her eyebrows rose. “Wow. Okay. We’re talking the soul-deep shit. Got it.”

Soul-deep. That…that was it. Vic was in me so deep it went all the way down to my soul.

“You know,” she went on, “I saw it the first time we met. He was already protecting you, worried about you, wanting you.”

Thunk. “He’s been seeing me in his dreams for a long time. I think that’s altered how quickly we fell.”

“I’m not so sure. We Wrens know pretty much from the second we meet. And when we fall, we fall hard. Tell me about these dreams.” She settled in closer like we were old friends catching up on gossip.

“Oh, I don’t know much.” I blushed all over. “Just that the dreams helped him get to know me.”

She narrowed her eyes and studied me closely. “Is this why he had a sudden interest in building a house? He’s been happy with Kirk all these years and then bam! He’s picking a spot and spending all his spare time building, building, building.”

My blush deepened. “Uh, yeah. The Plane, uh, showed him what to do.”

She lifted an eyebrow. “Reallllly? Fascinating. What is that sneaky Plane up to?”

I flexed my hands. “The Plane, it’s so easy for me there. Like everything is amplified.” I missed it. I missed the feeling, the power, but mostly the house and Vic.

“Okay. That’s important.”

“How?”

She shrugged. “We’ll find out when we need to. The Plane is a fickle friend. A sneaky sister. A Wiley coyote. She likes to hide her intentions until the last possible moment. It can be infuriating. Trust me.” She shot a glance at Atsila.

There was a story there, no doubt. I was about to ask when I felt a tug from somewhere in time and a tingle raced down my spine. I couldn’t identify the sensation or the reason, but I was suddenly afraid.

“Hey,” Leena touched my hand. “What’s wrong?”

“I feel scared all of a sudden. Like something just went wrong.”

Her gaze shifted over my shoulder for a moment then returned. “Anything else? A person or a place, perhaps?”

“Time.
